Biography

Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman, a male chemist, attended Raja Tun Azlan Shah Science School with flying colours. He graduated with a Double Major of B. Sc (Hons.) in Chemistry and Computer Science (1995) and received his Ph.D. in Catalysis Chemistry (1999) at the University of Southampton, England. He developed skills in catalysis at synchrotron radiation in Daresbury and Grenoble, protein engineering at Osaka University, and genetic engineering at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Mohd Basyaruddin is a true multidisciplinary scientist. His interests encompass broad areas from a single atom to a complex biomacromolecule. He is among the pioneer chemists in this country to synergise experimental results with theoretical insights. He currently is the leader of more than 10 research projects with grants from Malaysia and international bodies, including several ‘top-down’ national projects, securing more than RM 15 million to conduct research. He has supervised more than 20 Ph.D. and 40 MS postgraduate students (including international students). He has published more than 200 papers in cited journals and proceedings, specifically in protein chemistry and engineering, biocatalysis, nanobiotechnology, and computational chemistry. He also has patented more than 10 patents internationally. He has won more than 70 medals and awards at international and national scientific invention. He also won Young Scientist recognition from various bodies, including ACS, IUPAC, and IAP. Recently he won the National Intellectual Property Award 2009 and was named The Outstanding Young Malaysian 2008. He was the Head of the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science, UPM, and currently the Director of Structural Biology Research Centre, Malaysia Genome Institute.
