Amid growing global attention to sustainable development, Taiwan's scientific research has once again stepped onto the international stage. Professor Chia C. Wang, Director of the Aerosol Science Research Center at National Sun Yat-sen University, was invited to deliver a case-based keynote at the Inner Development Goals Summit 2025, held in Stockholm, Sweden. As the only representative from Asia to speak on the main stage, she joined scholars, policy leaders, and innovation practitioners from around the world to explore pathways for integrating the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Professor Wang noted that the Aerosol Science Research Center at NSYSU was the first in Taiwan to establish an IDG Hub, and its initiatives have received significant recognition from the IDG headquarters and partner hubs worldwide. For this summit, three exemplary cases were selected from more than 40 IDG Hubs globally for international sharing, representing Taiwan, the United States, and Argentina. The selection of NSYSU's Aerosol Science Research Center highlighted not only its academic and technological expertise, but also Asia's distinctive approach to sustainability—one that integrates scientific rigor with humanistic care.
According to a 2024 United Nations report, progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals has been broadly insufficient worldwide. As a result, an increasing number of international organizations are emphasizing the importance of inner development, recognizing that sustainability efforts can only be truly effective when human awareness, values, and emotional capacities evolve in parallel. This year’s IDG Summit, themed "Bridging Polarities," attracted more than 800 on-site participants and several thousand attendees online.
In her presentation, titled “Integrating IDGs and SDGs to Realize a Sustainable Earth,” Professor Wang shared practical examples beginning with the mechanisms of airborne particulate matter. She illustrated the deep interconnections between human respiration and Earth’s systems, and guided both in-person and online audiences through a mindful breathing exercise, symbolizing the reciprocal relationship between humanity and the planet. She emphasized that approximately seven million people worldwide die prematurely each year due to air pollution, and that respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 have further underscored the risks of airborne transmission. "Air quality," she stressed, "is not merely an environmental issue—it is a matter of life."
Quoting Albert Einstein's insight that problems cannot be solved with the same thinking that created them, Professor Wang drew on perspectives from aerosol science and quantum mechanics to highlight that humans are an integral part of the Earth system, rather than external observers of the environment. Through scientific explanation, she offered a new way of seeing that invites people to re-examine their relationship with the world, calling for an ecological awakening and a collective effort—beginning from within—to co-create a truly sustainable future for the planet.
